Your CTV Agency
Won't Tell You This

Most CTV agencies are good at buying media. They're less good at telling you what you don't need to buy.
This isn't a knock on agencies. Their business model incentivizes spend. The more you invest, the more they earn — whether that's through percentage-of-spend fees, platform kickbacks, or managed service margins. That's not a conspiracy. It's just misaligned incentives that brands need to understand.
Here are three things your CTV agency likely isn't volunteering:
- You might not need CTV yet. If your paid social is underperforming or your attribution is a mess, adding another channel won't fix the underlying problem — it'll just make it harder to diagnose. No agency wants to tell a client with a $200K USD budget that they should spend it somewhere else first.
- Their "premium inventory" might not be that premium. Ask for a placement-level report after your campaign. If the response is a platform-level summary or vague "top apps" breakdown, you're not getting transparency. You should know exactly which apps and content your ads ran against.
- Frequency is probably higher than they're reporting. Cross-platform frequency management in CTV is still largely unsolved. If you're running on three platforms through one agency, the same household might see your ad 15+ times before anyone catches it. That's not reach. That's waste.
The fix isn't to fire your agency. It's to become a better client. Ask harder questions. Request placement-level reporting. Set frequency caps at the strategy level, not just the platform level. And have someone in your corner who doesn't earn more when you spend more.
An advisor and an agency serve different roles. The best CTV strategies have both.
